Travel Tips

Travelling to La Gomera

There are no direct flights to the airport in La Gomera from anywhere outside of the Canary Islands. Despite this an early morning flight from the UK can have you on the island by 4.00pm.  So – there are normally two good options for anyone travelling to La Gomera:

1.Flight and Ferry

There are many cheap flights to Tenerife (South) by airlines such as Easyjet, RyanAir, Thompson, Norwegian Air and Monarch. Just make sure that they land at least 90 minutes before you need to catch the ferry from the nearby port of Los Cristianos to San Sebastian on La Gomera. This allows time to clear customs, catch the bus or taxi and purchase a ticket for the ferry. There are two companies running ferries and their timetables can be found at www.fredolsen.es/en/scedules or www.navieraarmas.com

The ferry takes from between 40 minutes to 1 hour dependent upon the ferry you catch. Finally you must catch a bus or taxi to Playa Santiago.

2.Two Flights

Alternatively you can opt to fly to Las Palmas on Gran Canaria, using any of the same airlines, then catch a Binter flight to Playa Santiago direct. This is possible as the local flight leaves from the same airport (not so on Tenerife). You still must be careful about the time necessary to clear customs and get to your next flight. This option is easier – especially from Scandinavian Countries where a lot more flights land in Gran Canaria.

Most large international car hire companies have offices at the airport and the ferry port. Cicar is the local Canary Island Company that has an excellent reputation. You will need a valid driving license and credit card to hire.

Insurance

The dive centre’s public liability is fully covered, but divers must have their own personal insurance which covers them for diving. With some travel insurance companies, diving is not covered so check with your tour operator before you travel. Holiday dive insurance is available from Splash Gomera for single dive or dive packs, you can arrange this when you arrive at the centre.

Certification Card

All divers must have a valid up to date certification to dive in La Gomera. If divers’ medical condition has changed a full up to date medical is necessary.
